Employees: A Company's Greatest Social Media Resource

It was a great experience to listen to the presentation by Alison Davis.  It was interesting to see low percentage of companies that engage in social media and networking to brand themselves and the high percentage of companies that will utilize social networking to recruit talent.

It becomes clear to me that companies have to start thinking about they can use social media to their advantage in this new age of technology.  I think companies that do not adopt some sort of internal social media marketing structure will find themselves left behind.

So it makes sense that companies should use their own employees to help with the different aspects of social media.  The Marketing Dept will of course be a great resource for the company but there a quite a few ways all other employee can help:

  • Employees can share ideas
  • Employees can help each other with work problems
  • Employees provide details about a certain function that can be seen by other employees despite having different geographical locations
I also think the companies should really get behind educating all employees on Social Media and all that is has to offer.  As suggested in the Altimeter Group slideshare,   http://www.slideshare.net/jeremiah_owyang/social-strategy-gettingcompanyreadyapr14final, companies can host internal training sessions so that employees can get updated on information on the latest social media technologies.

My employer has stated that the employees are its greatest asset.  I believe that every company would be wise to remember this and to use those greatest assets for mutual benefits.
