Finding The Expert

Establishing my personal brand has been a great experience and now that I have a clearer idea of what I have to offer, it is critical that I make it easy to find me online.

My name is so common, so searching for Kelly is not going to be enough.

Since I do have the social media tools of Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter I am more computer accessible.  Search words that you could combine with my full name would include:
  • Wakefern (the name of my employer)
  • Kean Student
  • Marketing (my area of study)
  • Retail Expert (how I have positioned myself on LinkedIn)
  • Produce (my area of expertise)
  • Produce Pundit (my personal blog)
  • kdavisproduce (again my personal blog)
  • Category Manager (my professional title)
My target audience of Retail and Marketing professionals would use the above search words to find me.  On the other hand, I can find my target audience in so many different online sites that I could use some of the following search words:
  • Retail
  • Food Industry
  • Retail Executives
  • Supermarket info
  • Women Executives
  • Marketers
  • Marketing news
Now if I try different combinations of my personal search words and those of my target audience I do not get the results that I want.  I would want the combinations to result in bringing up my personal blog or my LinkedIn profile.

Unfortunately, because my name is so common it was hard to get the wanted results.  I did however get the wanted result when I keyed in '"kelly davis produce women executive wakefern".  Finally, my LinkedIn profile came up on Yahoo Search!  Whoohooo!

I am glad that I am learning to use more social media tools and am gaining more experience with these tools.

One day I will become so popular as an expert in my field that just typing my very common name will result in my personal sites popping up first on any search engine.

Let Me Engage You!

My target audience would be employers, or employees in a business office that works with marketing, public relations or advertising.

One way I would engage my target audience would be Facebook. Try to find business on the website to 'Like' which will allow me to follow the business. That way perhaps I can respond to some posts and get in contact with some people that work for them.

Another way to engage target audience is LinkedIn. This will allow me to connect with ideal people to get me into the career industry I want. By simply 'Linking' with them will allow me to see their networks and see who or where I can direct my personal brand to.

Another engaging tactic I will pursue is to get myself out there. I personally know a few people in the marketing industry who attend Networking Events. Events in which all people to come to a common location and simply network themselves.

While at the event I can promote my personal brand and see if I can meet and contacts to further my career with their business.

I found a website NJSocialMedia.com which highlights people, business, and non-profit in New Jersey who use social media as a tool. It also highlights some events that anyone can attend and sign up for. This can be the opportunity any needs to get your name in peoples minds.

Facebook + Twitter = LOVE

I have to admit, I check status updates on Facebook at least every half hour. I am a bit of a Facebook junky.

I have had it for almost three years and have never been so involved as I am now. I use it to check up on old friends, new friends, and even family.

Just recently I used my Facebook for promoting my Personal Brand. At first I wasn't happy about using it for such reason, since it is my personal social media site which I never use for work purposes but I got incredibly good feedback.

I had made two posts:
1. KaylaKaplan: Last few weeks as a Kean student, cannot wait to start my life as a career woman, hopefully in the marketing field.. hint hint anyone in the industry! =)
2. KaylaKaplan: Hard worker right here.. work all week, school at night.. dedication is key to succeed.

Just recently I joined Twitter, have to say do not love it as much as Facebook at this point, but it is still new to me.

I had made two posts on Twitter promoting our class blog, and tried to see who would be interested.

If any one wants to connect with me, please feel free!

CLEANING UP MY ACT

While going through my lasts posts trying to clean them up, I've realized, blogging as not as easy as I though it would be!

At the beginning of class I took blogging as just writing what you think real quick on the website and be done with it. But that is not the case.

I've learned it takes a lot to make a post, a good post. I had bland headings, no sub headings, no hyperlinks, and not one picture to engage the reader.

From now on I have learned what takes to make someone want to read my post, and happy that I wrote it.

Let's see how I do ...

I Am Looking For YOU!

My target audience is male & females between on the ages of 18-55. My range is huge because I am involved in many things such as Public Relations, Event Planning, Performing Arts and Marketing.

Being involved in all of these various fields leaves me with a wide range of people to target depending on the field.

I would find my target audience with search words such as entertainment, youth in the arts, newark arts, international arts council, social events, fashion house, start up brand, new company, Newark art scene, agents.

My target audience are hanging out at places such as CNN.com, Lookbook.nu, CNET.com, BizBash.com, EventLucky.com, theultimatetrunkshow.com, online newspapers and magazines, fashion blogs, entertainment blogs.

Strategies for connecting with my audience on these particular sites would be creating a forum where I would be able to link a topic to these particular sites and finding out information through conversation from the readers.

Another strategy could be to create my own personal blog where I market or talk about services and build traffic to my site and attract my own audience.

Twitter & Facebook! My Addiction

Twitter and Facebook are apart of my everyday life. Most of the time my day consists of me waking up, saying a praying, checking my Facebook and Twitter accounts and going to either school or work.

Throughout the day I check both social media sites about 15-20 times an hour.

I am very engaged with my friends on Facebook and Twitter because on Facebook I am connected to family, friends and long lost friends, classmates and teachers.

On Twitter I am connected to like mind individuals in the same career field or fields that would be able to be of some assistance to me.

It was pretty easy to incorporate the class blog into my social media statuses because I promote different things on my networks all the time.

Still Learning. Always Improving.

When I created a Facebook, I had no idea how the site worked, but with time I got used to it.

I just recently joined Twitter and LinkedIn but i still haven’t had the chance to sit down, and explore all of their features. I know that it will take time for me to get used to using these sites.

I did learn how to linked my facebook account with twitter @millie_mirella, and Twitter with my linkedin account.

For the past week, every tweet I made showed up on my facebook. I tried getting our social media blog into my statuses, and did not get too much feedback.

I gained a follower, some friends left their twitter on my status so I can follow them, and I had a friend who asked about the class in general.

I will continue to get my twitter known to my friends, and have them give me feedback on my writing skills as well as to follow me.

Destination: Bower

Destination: target audience...
marketing directors, sales executives, marketing/sales headhunters and soccer scouts

How to find them:
Start out going south on DETERMINED, make left onto FUNNY after 1.2 miles, then make a right at CLEVER. Make a slight right onto ARTICULATE, merge onto SOCCER for.6 miles then go straight onto DEFENSE. Stay on SOCIAL GRACES and turn left onto MARKETING for 3.7 miles until you have reached destination: JOSH BOWER.

Redesigning the Past....

Passionately. Intensely. Creatively. It’s how I write. I’ve been known to create a synopsis into a mini novella.

I wouldn’t say much has changed since when I first started writing my blogs with the exception of shortened headlines and sensibly drafting two-sentenced paragraphs. And not easy as I had thought it would’ve been!

Even though it was two small learning curves, I saw a significant change in readability. Writing at work gives me a great deal of experience, however without the foundation of blogging (which I have learned in class) my blogs could’ve been hit or misses with readers.

Fortunately for work, this class has given me a different mind-set to the art of blogging. My words are written with much more structure – almost as structured as the Brooklyn Bridge: precise tone, synergistic look, beautiful composition.

I will incorporate what I have learned in this class into my work and future blog endeavors.

Cleaning For A Cause

Blogging. I had an idea of what this class entailed, yet still wasn't quite sure what the exact specifics were.

I always assumed blogging was for narcassists, talking about their daily rituals starting from the early AM to PM, however I have learned that there is much more groundwork to blogging about doing ones laundry than simply just "blogging."

After doing a few blogs I have wondered if I'm actually in control of writing them. I say this because blogging is not just about exuding mye to others, but it's also about capturing my audience.

Does our audience control what we say? As in: do we say things just to capture an audience rather than communicate actual ocurances and in how we feel?

Eventually I will learn more of the groundwork of blogging. And I know that I have absorbed some of the essential parameters of this social communication.

Self Motivated Climber

Josh Bower: A Verb

Josh Bower [josh – bow - er ]

Verb (used with name) Joshua Bower

  1. to take initiative in action or thought; determination.
  2. not afraid to lead a pack vs. being a follower.

What makes me distinctive? Look at 1 and 2 above.

In my life I've always strived to do things that people said were beyond my reach.

It all started when I was 10 years old…

trying out for a soccer team. My peers told me “you could only make if you knew someone”. Knowing it was all politics, I proved them otherwise and I proved to myself initiative.

Needless to say, two weeks later I was on the team starting every game. Being the leader of my own, I challenged myself to develop strong determination for achievement.

My mantra: determination will prevail.

With competitive nature, this mantra helped in countless life situations - ending with good results.

While at the same time deciding to pursue an automotive career, I spent two years at Brookdale Community College in addition to graduating from the Toyota T Ten program as a Certified Technician.

I began enjoying the benefits of my new career and full-time employment. But there was still something missing.

A feeling of change was resonating within me. My competitive spirit was not being satisfied.

I found myself missing what brought me ultimate satisfaction: soccer.

I left Toyota after two years and went back to Brook Dale to study business and to play soccer again. Yet being out of the game for nearly 3.5 years I knew this would be an arduous task to endure.

During training I found myself falling mid-pack to the others that were all 4+ years younger than me. They were in better shape and had better endurance.

Keeping my mantra at top of mind, I kept my head up. Training harder and dedicating the time into my passion, I obtained a regular starting position.
After two successful years playing, I would soon find myself facing one of the most challenging predicaments I’ve ever had.

During a game I endured a hard collision with another player. I was left with a broken tibia and fibia in my right leg.

The impact came with brutal force. The sky precipitated on top of me.

2 months later - with a titanium rod in my leg - I was again faced with the challenge of getting back into playing. Some said it would tough, others said impossible.
What future laid ahead for me? What would happen to my passion for soccer?

Being over a year now, I’m back to perfect health and training more and more to get myself back to the highest level I’m capable of playing at. When asked if I think I can play at the level I was I answer “of course!” Determination is everything in my life and I refuse to be held back by an injury.

The moral of my story: determination

Making the Connection

I know who I want to target, so why is it so hard for my audience to find me?

Since the marketing field is so competitive, I need to set myself apart from everyone else. I want to incorporate sports, specifically football or tennis, into my advertising career.

Target Audience:
My target is marketing and advertising agencies, sports agencies, and other potential employers.

Finding My Audience:
Marketing
Advertising
Sports
Football
Tennis

How My Audience Can Find Me:
Advertising
Full-time student
Blogging
Marketing major
When future employers combine these search words, it will make finding me easier.

Where They Hang Out:
Facebook
LinkedIn
Twitter
Foursquare

Strategies:
One of the most important things I can do to put myself out there is to start connecting with marketing and advertising employees via LinkedIn. Building connections is the best first step. I need to start joining more groups on Facebook relating to my career interests, and following them on Twitter.

@StephhhKay

I'd say I go on Facebook 4 or 5 times a day. However, Twitter is fairly new to me. LinkedIn is even newer.

Incorporating this class into my personal Facebook and Twitter accounts was definitely different for me.

Facebook Updates:

1. "Never though writing about myself would be so hard! "

2. "Exploring Twitter and LinkedIn for my social media class!"

Twitter Updates:

1. "Follow my social media class' blog; Monday Night Media Mix"

2. "Hoping to incorporate my love of football into my marketing career #determination"

The Cleaner, the Better

I feel like I've come a long way in the blogging world since the first class.

After looking at my first post and comparing it to my most recent one, I've definitely improved! From my headlines to the body, it's all coming together.

I can honestly say I was nervous about each paragraph being only two sentences, but I'm glad I'm getting in the habit of it. I feel like my writing is becoming better with each week!

I never thought blogging would really be something I was interested doing, nor did I think it would take so much effort to keep on top of it. It's definitely something I hope to stick with when the semester ends.

I got you!

Videos, pictures, information, incentives, and a simple story are engaging ways for me to feel and get connected with a group. I am a very simple person so anything that I can emotional assimilate myself with will most likely be engaging to me.

If I were to create a blog and tell the world my story like I did on my first blog entry for my personal brand; Give You Skills a Bit of Recognition , I would link it to my Facebook, Twitter, and most likely Linkedin.

I would also reach out to blogs I feel encouraging and uplifting to others. Connecting all of theses senses together would bring my target audience closer to me, so a can develop a motivation and balance in their hectic lives.

"Some people think that optimism is about living in a perfect world where everything is nice and bad things never happen to good people. Well, nothing could be further from the truth. Optimism really is a courageous state of mind – one that comes from a person’s desire, effort, and choice to accept and make the best of difficult situations." "Be Optimistic" by David Cottrell

Word of mouth is the cheapest and most affective way to "connect” and “engage” an idea. Immediate response from blogers, facebook walls, and twitter messages will let me know how affective my message is.

Everyday I post encouraging uplifting, cheering messages on my facebook page. I get a lot of  feedback saying; “Thank you, I really need to hear that” or “You just made my day”. I might skip a day or two, and I already notice the difference on their reaction asking me if I am okay. What happened to my post?

Why?  Because, I have developed a relationship with them showing them I CARE. Which shows me; I make a difference!  Results!

To engage is to gain someone's attention and over the years i've learned to do that pretty well. When it comes to my carrer i'll need to engage some pretty important people that will be a bit of a challenge.

I love a good challenge.

Using my favorite professional tool, LinkedIn, I want to interact with some people in the sports industry. By doing so I joined a group awhile back called, Sports Marketing and PR Pros but now i'm going to start engaging in what people say.

To drive some is to inspire them. I want to inspire people to believe in me. I want to again use LinkedIn to show off my talents in what i've done in marketing and what i'm currently doing at my internship in sports.

In doing this people would be impressed enough to either reach out to me or at least listen to me when I reach out to them.

I'm going to drive people to my profile by posting interesting things and making sure I can comment back to them.

Now I need to give my audience something? Well i'm going to be bold about this and write a post in my LinkedIn group that will give my audience something to engage in and drive them to my profile. I want to write about my experience as a college student getting into sports.

I want to share my success so far and show people what I got. Hopefull this will show people how serious I am and more importantly, get my name in their heads.

Clean Up! Clean Up!

Considering how I have never blogged a day in my life until this class, I feel like I have come a long way!

After going back and looking at the very first blog I wrote and then to the one I had last written I feel like my blog writing has significantly improved!

My writing, formatting, and just the over all style has improved for the better. The only thing I would have to say that I am still looking to improve would have to be my titles and headlines.

However, I am hoping with some more blog writing that I will become a pro in no time!

Incorporating My Professional Life Through Tweets and Status Updates

Considering how I consider myself a Facebook junkie I am on it constantly and always updating about things going on through out my day and life.

Twitter however, is something very new to me, and is something that until now, I would only use to see what the Kardashians' or any other celebrity for that matter were doing.

With that said and especially since my Twitter is linked to my LinkedIn I have been trying to interact with the site a little more.

Facebook Updates:

Update #1:

So I had just gotten an assignment to create a personal brand for myself. Former Co-Workers I am having a hard time thinking of all the skills I can offer. Help me out please!

Update#2

So threw out my Social Media course I have been taking this semester, I have recently discovered LinkedIn, which has been a whole new world to me. I love the fact that I can get my name and personal brand out there to be seen and heard! Any one else have LinkedIn? If so connect with me!

Tweets:

The Three W's: What? Who? Where?

Targeting an specific audience is not as simple as I thought. Yes, knowing what to do in life is one thing, but knowing how to get there is a completely different thing.

This blogging experience has actually had me thinking things through; it has helped me learn a thing or two about myself, about my career path, about my future!

After thinking and over thinking what kind of audience I wanted to target, I realized that my target audience are those who are involved in the B2B, international industry, import/export or foreign affairs field.

Search words to describe myself

  • committed bilingual marketer
  • optimistic
  • student
  • successful
  • determined wholesaler
  • blogger

My target search words are very straight forward

  • B2B
  • Foreign affairs jobs
  • Wholesale trade
  • Wholesale merchants
  • Trading partners
  • international relations
Results of my words and target words
  • optimistic B2B
  • foreign affairs jobs for students
  • successful trading partners
  • determined wholesale merchants
  • international relations bloggers

Where?? to find my target are obviously facebook and linkedin, and these few other sites:

The best way to engage in any field is by socializing. Adding people, joining groups, becoming a fan, commenting on articles, or liking statutes will help get my name out there.

How To Find Me

Last class I had a bit of trouble trying to figure out the search words and key demographic for my topic. Then when I saw what ads came up when I was on my Facebook I could not see how they targeted me!

Writing for my personal brand may be a bit easier since I love to talk about myself. :)

When it comes to my future and career I'm looking to target people that are in the marketing field and more specifically the sports world.

I would use words such as "sports", "marketing", "Giants", "Jets", "NFL", "Public Relations", and "sales".

When it comes to my personal brand people could find me under words like "confident", "go getter", "creative", "customer service", "great work ethic", "spontaneous," and "exciting".

Together, you'd get a spontaneous, creative sports marketing genuis.

I found a fan blog online at http://www.giantsfootballblog.com/ that if I hung out around for long enough I'm sure an employee would check it every now and then.

I also would hang out around LinkedIn groups that surround sports marketing and young professionals in the sports field.

In order to engage with these people I'd join the groups on LinkedIn, which some I already have, and interact as much as possible. This way they'd go to my page and see what I have done so far in the marketing world.
