Growth in Advertising

Advertising has come a long way. Currently holding the title as the most successful means of advertising: The Social Media!

Makes sense to engage your audience where they hang out. With that being said, “Facebook and Twitter dominate the advertising landscape”.

According to a recent study by The Pivot Conference, 67% of businesses are using the social media for advertising, 18% are expected to get on board with in the next year and yet there is still a 12% who have no plans to employ within the next year.

Most Popular Platforms Used to Advertise in the Social Media.

  • Facebook 93%
  • Twitter 78%
  • Youtube 61%
  • Linkedin 44%
  • Foursquare 20%

Not to say that there aren’t other means of advertising, but it’s hard to understand why some businesses have not tried it yet. With all the benefits it has to offer and the success it brings why not?

In addition, businesses are now being pushed to further explore other advertising platforms such as Linkedin and Foursquare. Continuing to use these platforms with in the next year, according to an anticipated forecast there will be a successful increase of 20%.

I am pretty sure given the time the remaining businesses will learn to adapt to advertising through the social media. I think it’s safe to say that the other methods are not as effective.

Social Media Take Over

Social Media has become the newest and one of the most powerful tools, when it comes to branding yourself and and advertising.

When I researched the term social media and advertising, a variety of web pages came up, I came across a blog which I found pretty interesting.

http://sharemarketing.wordpress.com/2009/03/05/social-media-is-advertising/

In this blog, shes discusses another blog she came across, arguing the difference between advertising and social media. The writer of this blog clearly believes that social media isn't the answer into getting your product or company more success.

I happened to disagree with her post, because social media and advertising have merged together to become one powerful tool when it comes to marketing. Almost everyone has some type of social media, whether it be Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Yelp, etc.

Companies as well are all over social media, for that purpose! To advertise their companies, services, and products.

I currently work at NJ Eye Care, the office manager has recently started a Facebook page, to help get our office out there to the community and help the office get new patients, through our current patients. She's even added the "Find us on Facebook" link to our website.

So every time we receive a new patient, we ask how they found our office or how they were referred to us, surprising most of them say they found us through our Facebook page through a mutual friend.

This is exactly why I disagreed with her post, because yeah social media isn't exactly every thing that advertising consists of, but it is a form of it. In today's society it's the biggest and easiest way to promote!

Targeting New and Maintaining Old Connections.

It hasn't been as easy to engage my audience and drive them to where I want them to go. However, setting up a couple profiles within the social media has helped a great deal being that not many people knew who I was until I until set up these profiles.

I am and continue to engage my audience through Linked In for the most part. Linked In is where I have been hanging out online recently, connecting to some of my colleagues, classmates and their connections.

My approach to connecting has been working out so far. I look up the people I know that I think may have a profile within the same field and send them an invite.

For those I do not know, in order to connect I personalize the invite with a message like this, “I think we may have something in common…”

My target audience has been those within the same field, but I am thinking of connecting to others in different fields and get to know more about what else I can be part of.

My secondary source where I connect to my audience is through Twitter. Here I find out what is going on and discuss related topics with people who share similar as well as different interests.

So far I have connected to a few of my colleagues and a couple which I don’t normally talk to, that’s a plus. Currently, I am following more people on twitter, than I have following me.

Other than my colleagues I have been following CNN news, Z100 the radio station and the US Weekly for gossip. I have to admit I’ve had some strange people follow me and I honestly did not agree with what they represented so I managed to block them and remove them off my profile.

Through these channels I have been able to promote my brand, and continuously reach out my audience. So far it has been working out better than I expected and now more and more people are getting to know who I am.

The success hasn't stopped here though. In order to continue to promote myself even more I have added links to my blogs to drive my audience to read more about me and sent out invites to my connections, connections.

Below I have listed some of my blog links for those who would like to see some of my work through our Class blog.

· Forklift Expert + Kean Student = Future Marketer

· Social Media Plus Employees Equals Success!

· My Goal!

I have a good feeling about the audience I have attracted so far and the more that I will generate by just being who I am. By being creative, showing a different style of what people are used to seeing, I feel I will attract more people to want to find out more about me.

Connecting to the Next Step

Every Sunday, is "Football Sunday" at my brother's house. The guys sit around watch the games all day and drink beer, while all the girls are in the kitchen inventing things to make, and of course we use the guys as our little guinea pigs.

Now I'm not looking to be a chef or a baker, but just to simply advertise for what I have passion for. Even though I'm a junior in college, I feel like I still have time to figure out my plan, but in reality I don't.

The marketing field is a competitive field, so what I need to do is start looking for connections to help me have a foot in, for when I am ready to begin my career.

My Target Audience:
My target audience would be marketing agencies, advertising agencies, restaurant/baking groups, marketing executives, etc.

List of Search Words:
Advertising
Restaurants
Bakeries
Marketing
Advertising Agencies

Where They are Hanging Out:
When I typed in these search words into the search engines, many of the place I found them to be "Hanging out" online were :
Facebook
Yelp
LinkedIn
4A's Inkblot

How my Target Audience can Find Me:
The way to get yourself out there and known, is not by just going out to find your target audience, but also find a way to make it easy for them to find you. Words to describe my personal brand so they can find me through social media tools would be:

Foodie
Student
Intern
Marketing
Advertiser
Optometrist Tech (currently at the moment)

Combining these words with the list of words describing my target audience, makes it easier for future employers (my target audience) to find me quicker. It doesn't even have to be future employers but people who share the same interests as me, which is always a plus because it can expand my connections, leading to employment opportunities.

Strategies In Engaging:
Since I want to work in the Marketing/Advertising Field, best way to get in the field is through connections! As I mentioned before my cousin works for BakeMark USA, My first connection right there!

Me and him are friends on LinkedIn, I could start connecting with some of the groups that he's LinkedIn with, especially since the field he is in deals with food!

I can also start to follow other groups on Facebook, Yelp, 4A's Inkblot, etc, and begin to get a feel of where and how I can better promote my brand!

What's On Your Mind?

Facebook:

..."All those in favor of another day off, say I"

... "Just when you though it could not get any worse."

Twitter:

..."Another pointless headline!"

..."See you at Maggiano's!"

Advertising Myself to Advertise Food- Take 2!

MY BRAND?
I'm a determined young woman who wants to work in the advertising industry, preferably marketing for food, being my guilty pleasure is indulging in food!

OBJECTIVES:
Since I want to work in the advertising industry, why not start by marketing myself!
Talk to anyone that knows me and the first thing they will tell you about me is, "Boy can she eat!" Food equals Jenny!

To me food is the answer to all my problems, it always has a way of making everything better. No matter what type of day I'm having, bad or good I know I can always turn to food to be there. What can I say, I love food, the smell, the taste, that great full feeling after!

Food is universal, a common language that everyone understands. It comes in different tastes and forms. They say do something that makes you happy, food makes me happy, so why not market something I love.

CHANNELS AND STRATEGY:

Before this class the only social media tool, that I used was Facebook. Since this class, I've started a LinkedIn account as well as a Twitter. Perfect ways for me to start networking and getting myself out there.

I advertise food and restaurants all the time on my Facebook and Twitter account to my friends and family.

On Facebook I usually use the check-in tool when ever I'm out to eat at a restaurant, it shows people where I am, and make people curious of where the restaurant is, in a way that is subliminally promoting their food and restaurant.

It’s something that comes natural to me, except now I have to start thinking professionally and begin to network with people who work in food industries and advertising agencies.

My cousin currently works for the company BakeMark USA, a sales representative where he goes around to different businesses selling the companies ingredients and pastries.

He is constantly bringing me treats, and I normally take a picture of the pastries and post them on Facebook describing how delicious they are. When people ask me about the treats I give them my cousin’s business card.

So in a way, I am already advertising food,
I'm getting his company's name out there. My cousin thanks me all the time for the help even though I don’t do it intentionally.

Being my cousin is already in the field I want to be in he has told me he can help me network with companies on LinkedIn since he’s already networking with them, maybe even work in his company.

AUDIENCE:
My main target audience, would be directly towards house wives, women and whoever enjoys food. Mostly people dealing with food and women who take care of their families.

MESSAGE:
I'm not really sure if this is the exact road I'll take to get where I want be in a few years, but hey it’s a start, a girl can dream and my dreams will come true.

I will work to advertise for what I love, and that’s food!

Facebook, Twitter & Linkedin! Which is better?

I have been using Twitter for about 2 years now & in my opinion this is the BEST social media website on the internet. Since I singed up to Twitter I have managed 3 accounts.

I managed a online boutique account, my personal account and now I manage a non-profit performing arts twitter account. This social media tool has helped me gain local, international and celebrity awareness for brands that I am associated with.

I personally like twitter better than any other social media site because unlike Facebook celebrities are more likely to answer your 'tweets' quicker than they will respond to a Facebook message.

I have been able to speak to the Mayor of Newark, connect with famous alumni from my high school (Arts High School), bring brand awareness to companies that I am apart of & generate new clients for my event planning business all through Twitter.

I have seen people complain about a company on twitter & the company would tweet them back apologizing for the inconvenience and give them a solution to their problem. Twitter in my opinion is for random and promotional use only; either you are tweeting about random things or you are promoting a event, company, brand, music or television show. Twitter is extremely entertaining.

Facebook is a great 'catching up' tool. I use Facebook when I want to check up on people or see what they have been up too.

Facebook allows you to add photo albums, job history and relationship statues. Facebook is a great social media tool to reconnect with people that live in a different country or that you have lost contact with in the last couple of years.

Many people use Facebook to find their long lost friends and keeping in contact with people. One thing that I loved that Facebook did and kind of gave them an edge was to add a 'fan page' tool.

The fan page can be used to promote a company, a band, music group, brand or anything that you want to promote. People have actually used their fan pages in media kits and business plans to show how people on the internet are reacting to their product.

I used the Facebook fan page to promote a company that I am a PR Director for (www.facebook.com/livebreatheart) and it has helped us visually see who are demographics are and how we can appeal to them.

I am not an vivid user on LinkedIn but for the one day that I actually sat down and took time to browse the site and put my information on the site.

I think that this is a great business site for people to network and interact with some very influential people.

Twitter's for the Followers!

It's Monday night get home from class, grab some food, walk into the room, grab the laptop and turn the TV on. Go to my recorded list and put dancing with the stars on. Forward through it and find Rob Kardashian’s part, just to see how well he did, since that’s all the Kardashian sisters were tweeting all night! Convinced, Rob got my vote!

It's amazing how celebs can easily influence their fans to do things especially now since social media is their main source of interaction with their fans or should I say followers.

In the example used with the Kardashians, they promote themselves mainly through social media, Twitter, a popular social media tool that celebs and people use to tweet about things happening in their daily lives.

Who needs the news now when you have a "Twitter"? Take when Apple’s ceo, Steve Jobs past away, it was all over twitter!

The pros of Twitter you get to see what your favorite celebrities are up to and you find out the latest news within minutes. It’s a great way to promote yourself, just look at Snooki, she promotes her ridiculous creations as well as other celebs promote their albums and movies.

Yea it sounds like all glitz and glamour, but is it really? Do you really want anyone to be allowed to see what you are tweeting? There's no privacy anyone can follow your account and easily have access to what you are writing.

Can we speak our mind? You’re limited on what you write! This isn’t a text message where you only get to write 140 characters! Some may think of it as a pro but at the end of the day you shouldn't be limited to what you have to say.

Just like celebs use Twitter to promote, companies do the same except they promote their services or products.

Individuals use Twitter just the same as celebs, to update their statuses on what their up to, to follow their favorite celebrities and for networking as well.

Twitter has become such a big hit with today’s society, it’s hard not to fall into today’s trend. So at the end of the day, who are YOU going to follow?

6 Steps, 1 Brand!

Okay so I'm still new to this whole Social Media concept, but I am quickly beginning to understand why it is important, and the benefits that can come from it in my future, which is why these 6 steps, can help me in building my personal brand.

1. Determine your objective
By me knowing what I want to accomplish and how I'm willing to do it. What is the message that I want to give to my audience. I don't really tweet or blog, I use Facebook more often, but by having a facebook, twitter, and now a blog I am helping myself build a personal brand so it can help me in the future to network with companies and people.

2.Determine your audience's aptitude
Put myself in my audience's shoes and trying to figure out what they would enjoy to read. Figuring out what makes me different from everyone else can help me in building my personal brand.

3. Carefully select your platforms and tools
Me staying on top of my strategy and being consistent, so I wont lose my audience to others.

4. Avoid content overload-curate the most interesting pieces
Don't beat around the bush and get straight to the point. Too much information will bore my audience. Stick to the script and get my point out there, but also make it interesting to read that it leaves your audience wanting more.

5. Empower your employees to build their personal brand
Well I don't have any employees to empower to build their personal brand, but to friends and everyone else I would recommend putting themselves out there through social media, such as forums, blogs, facebook, twitter, etc.. Its a great way to network with people and businesses.

6. Measure the initiative's success against your objectives
Receive feedback from my audience to know what I can improve on and to know what is or isn't working. Giving good unique content that people haven't seen before will differentiate me from the rest of the crowd, helping me build my personal brand.
